How to Become a Notary Public

Make It Stand Out.

Are you considering becoming a notary public in your state? If so, I’m sure you have a ton of questions concerning the process, the benefits, the income potential and more, right? Trust me, I’ve been in your shoes, and have created this post specifically for you! Here are 3 basic steps to get started, as well as a few things you should consider as you get started as a notary.

Most people who get started are generally looking for:

  • Part-time side hustle

  • Replacement of an existing full-time job/career

  • Additional services to add to an endeavor they are already active in

Regardless of your reason, becoming a notary checks off all the boxes above and is definitely one of the most lucrutive, yet inexpensive businesses you can start up quickly. We’ll cover all those details, but be sure to join The HYPHEnotary Hub community for the latest notary tips, tricks, and guides on how to build a successful notary business.

Now, first things first. How to Get Started.

  1. Check your state requirements to ensure you meet the qualifications.

I am in the state of Florida and the requirements listed below are subject to Florida law. However, most general qualifications apply across the board for all states. Check your state to be sure.

    • You must be at least 18 years of age

    • Legal resident/alien of the state of Florida

    • Clean criminal record*

      * If ever convicted of a felony, you may still be appointed, however, your civil rights must be restored before applying. Additional documentation may be required. Refer to the FL Governor’s Reference Manual for Notaries Public for more information.

    • Complete a 3-hour notary course/exam

  2. Complete and submit your notary application with a state approved bonding agency.

The bonding agency will process your application and upon approval, will issue your state-required notary bond and produce your notary seal/stamp. They may also provide options for you to purchase E&O insurance.*

*E&O Insurance, also known as errors and ommissions insurance is optional, but may be required for certain notary acts that you decide to perform.

See information below regarding the National Notary Association (NNA) as they can assist with the entire process as well.

  3. Market yourself as a notary!

Now that you are official, its time to let people know what you do!

But, one important step that needs to takes place before you market yourself, is how you will market yourself. What business structure are you considering? We won’t go into too much detail in this post, but be sure to read our post Choosing the Right Business Structure which covers everything you need to make a decision.

Now, back to marketing! Social media is a great way to get the word out to your network. Given that you’re so new, you may not be comfortable starting with social media right away and that’s ok. In-person marketing is always a great way to start as well. Here are a few ideas to consider as you prepare your marketing plan.

    • Business Cards

    • Website/Landing Page

    • Flyers/Postcards

    • Google Business Page/Yelp Page
